Writing honestly and truthfully about your experience can be far more challenging than writing fiction.
Like many writers I have excavated my own life for fictional material and probably always will. But I found it incredibly difficult to write directly about personal experiences.
In 2007 I embarked on a major project researching the life of my great grandmother Atalia Samuelson, who was committed to a mental institution at the age of 24. The parallels between her life and mine resulted in a book of poetry, "Shell." The experience taught me a great deal about the difficulties and rewards of saying the words you most need to say.
I run lifewriting groups and classes and can also offer one to one support for a particular project via the Viewpoint service. For more information please contact me by email at firstname.lastname@example.org by phone 01424 714294.
